How Your NYSTRS PensionIs Calculated

Your NYSTRS pension is a large part of retirement for many New York educators. Membership tier, service credit, Final Average Salary, and timing shape the check. This page helps you ask better questions of NYSTRS. It is not a calculator.

Confirm With NYSTRS This page is a general overview from publicly available NYSTRS materials. Atlas Benefits Advisor does not calculate pension benefits. Your benefit depends on your records, tier, service credit, salary history, and current law. Verify details in MyNYSTRS or by calling NYSTRS.

Membership Tiers (General Overview)

How Benefits Are Generally Calculated

According to NYSTRS, the maximum annual pension is generally determined by this structure:

Pension Factor × Age Factor (when applicable) × Final Average Salary

Pension Factor

Based on total service credit and tier. Rates typically increase at certain service milestones. Exact percentages depend on your tier and records.

Final Average Salary (FAS)

Generally the average of the highest three consecutive school years of regular salary for most members. Tier-specific rules, limits, and exclusions can apply. Confirm details with NYSTRS.

Age Factor and Retirement Timing

Retiring before the full-benefit age for your tier, or without the required service credit, may reduce the check. For Tier 6 members, 2026 legislation adjusted the age at which an unreduced benefit is available when 30 or more years of service credit are completed. Confirm eligibility with NYSTRS.

Areas Educators Often Review

These are common topics members take to NYSTRS or bring to an educational conversation:

  • • Confirming service credit and whether any prior or purchasable credit applies
  • • Understanding how Final Average Salary is calculated under current rules
  • • Reviewing how age and service credit affect retirement timing
  • • Learning about available benefit payment options
  • • Considering how supplemental savings, such as a 403(b) or 457(b), sit next to the pension

NYSTRS makes the determinations from official records and current law.
